SuperJumpman12 has been grinding away at Meteor Herd and I've started work on Prison Lane, although i'm in a bit of an uncreative patch so while I like most of the stage layout i've designed so far, i'm probably going back and refining stuff (or frankly deleting it and re-doing it) later all part of the process!

the day's not over yet, but today i'm feeling WAY better and more creative. i took an hour today and redid some of those parts of Prison Lane that i wasn't hot about, and made more progress too!
so far it's nothing to shake a stick at and takes like 37 seconds to swiftly jaunt thru, but after placing down more enemies and objects that'll probably be 45ish seconds. which is great since i'm aiming for a playtime of around 3 minutes

jumped in and added some stuff to Prison Lane. im really happy with the section i made, and luckily, it motivated marbley to continue on with the level, too. i really like this approach of ping-ponging level design. I WANT TO DO IT MORE IN THE FUTURE!
(and dont worry, i think the level will be decently fun to speedrun)

happy Friday everyone!
my big task thus far has been working on Prison Lane, the first Claire level for PA3. (we'll have PA3-ified names for all the stages eventually. for now its easier to just acknowledge them by their SA2 names)
having bounced around a lot of different projects lately, it was hard to get back into a groove with Prison Lane. and when you're not feeling it, sometimes it's really intimidating even working on a project at all.
that's why lately i've been bringing back an old bit of advice I used to tell myself: just do any work, no matter how big or small, every day. as long as you chip away at your project every day, you can feel good that you're making progress and not stalling out.
as i've been trying to grind through my funk, I'd like to think I'm effectively out of it! it's just a matter now of trying not to get distracted by other projects, honestly.
another thing i've noticed with myself is that, if i don't have pre-textured assets ready to build a level with, it's much more difficult for me to actually design things. the theming of a stage really helps me build things and get ideas on-the-fly for more cool things to build and such.
i'd also like to thank SuperJumpman12 for coming in clutch and doing some of that texturing on pieces that i was not in the mood to do myself. it was the walls of the large interior rooms of Prison Lane. but now that they're done, i'm way more confident in the open-room areas i've built, now that I can actually see them in a fully-textured confined space that'll end up being how they look in the final game. it gives me a lot more confidence in general of the parts of the stage i've been working on this week.
in typical cake fashion i wont spoil TOO much, but i do have this screenshot of the most recent part of Prison Lane i've been working on! it's all subject to change or adjustment, of course. but have a good weekend!
if i make more substantial progress, you'll see it here first.
and if you wanna get the latest updates as soon as they're out, join the forums here and follow along with this thread! we don't post updates anywhere else, but people are allowed to circulate them outside the forums. we just like using this space

here's something that i've been working on for the past couple months: Mad Space! that's right. i've been working for months on a single level to this game. i'm totally drained and wanna move on. why is it taking so long, you might ask? well, let me regale you. everyone knows Mad Space in the og SA2 kinda sucks. the mario galaxy planet-type thing they have going on doesn't cooperate well with SA2's engine, and, by extension, PA3's engine, since Digital Swirl is a decomp of SA1's code. so, i wanted to rethink what to do with that stage. at first, i wondered if it would be any better if the planets were cube-shaped, with rounded edges that allow you to run around to the other sides. after all, there wasn't any flat ground to walk on those planets, which might be what's bugging out the slope physics. it was not. okay. scrapping that idea, then. marbleycake and i got to thinking about how we could keep the spirit of funky gravity alive while having something that was fun to play, and not totally buggy. eventually, we thought of the idea of making the stage almost entirely on its side. the player barely has any solid ground to run on, so the whole time, they have to climb on stuff, run along the sides of walls, figure out how to get through without a set path, and make sure not to fall. that sounded kind of fun, so i got to work pretty quickly. i didn't like how my first draft turned out, though. it was way too linear with too many footholds, kind of defeating the purpose of the stage. but i didnt want the level to feel like it was just a bunch of floating platforms without rhyme or reason. so, i talked to a friend, and i realized the issue was that the stage didn't have an "anchor." there's a little more theming and setpieces in the stage now. i won't go too deep into it, because i want it to be a surprise, but check this out: boom. see that space station? that shattered planet? kinda cool. there's points of interest, with the funky sideways platforms now being more of a means of traversal. i like it better now! the stage is absolutely massive, though, and it's taking forever to get done. hopefully i finish it in the next few weeks, but we'll see. the layout is mostly done, i just need to model a few things in blender and place down all the objects.

hey yall! it's been a bit since the last update here. i've been dealing with finals, but now that i've graduated, i've got some more time to work on PA3 going forward. prison lane is 100% DONE, and that'll be helpful doing Iron Gate whenever we get to it, considering how much they share assets. we posted a few images of the stage already, so i don't want to spoil too much. marbleycake and i have been tag-teaming creating levels lately, and we'll probably continue to do so in order to get them done and move onto everything else. we've also wrapped up something even more exciting, though, that we may show off soon, so stay tuned...
